The solution you describe is not a cryoprotectant.
It is an anti-freeze. 

A cryoprotectant is used before freezing and cutting 
sections, to reduce the sizes of the ice crystals in 
the tissue. 30% sucrose in water is a commonly used
cryoprotectant for blocks of fixed tissue.
