RE: CPT CODING

Janice,
The answer would depend on the type of fluid that you are talking about.
88162 is for fluids that are not FNA's, Gyn's or washings, brushings or
fluids, these would include sputum or nipple aspirations etc. If the fluid
is covered under the category washings, brushings or fluid then you would
charge an 88108 only, however, depending on the type of stains, if you are
performing special stains, such as AFB or GMS then you can charge an 88108 +
a charge for the stains (88312 x number of different special stains). Let
me know, if I have only confused you more. Thanks

Can anyone tell me if it is acceptable to charge both 88108 and 88162 on a
fluid? We are doing multiple stains on cyto spins from a single specimen.
Thanks.
