  This has been discussed in HistoNet exchanges for as long as
  I've been a subscriber (? 1996-). Experienced users say that
  Mayer's Haemalum works just as well if you simply don't include
  the chloral hydrate.  

  The archives  ( www.histosearch.com  I hope I'm not mis-quoting ) 
  certainly contain the answer to your question, and probably will
  direct you to published sources.
