I am looking for a procedure to collect specimens at the bed-side for amyloid and then stain Congo red.  The old procedure I have says to collect in a 19 gauge needle and smear between 2 slides and fix in 10% formalin then stain.  If there is anyone out there who has done this procedure, I look forward to hearing from you.  Also, what type of control should I use with that?  I don't have a known positive.
