I'm not sure if the over night (24hr) drying of sections is good for staining. I've done that before because I had the same problem: tissue falling off the slides during rehydration. But all what I got is excessive background, no matter how low I went on the dilutions. However, Mari's suggestion on "baking" the slides in an oven (I do it at 55-60C) helps a lot. But like I mentioned, nothing beats superfrost, poly-lysine (positively charged) coated slides. Hope this is helpful.
