Cynthia Favara recommended some papers by Dr. Shi in regard to antigen
retrieval.  I second that recommendation.  Dr. Shi made up a "test
battery" to isolate and test the effects of antigen retrieval solutions
and temperatures on many common antigens.  The results show that there is
no single best way to proceed.  We have some reprints of these articles
