Pat,
In my experience, blended alcohol (60% isopropyl/40% methanol) gives
superior results, especially for staining.  Try Richard-Allan Scientific
"Flex" and "Clear-Rite 3".  We've used them for the past 12 years or so.
I hate limonene-based products.
