Presoaking sponges, an old trick

From:Gayle Callis <uvsgc@montana.edu>

Good advice, Joyce!

This is an old trick and works for unfixed/partially fixed tissues going
into plastic cassettes. Just dip tissue in fixative to rapidly fix a
miniscule layer of cells, and tissue should not stick to plastic.

Too thick a tissue, or squishing the sponge against the tissue by jamming a
lid down is another thing. I have seen lid marks on the tops of tissues
and sponge could do this to tiny biopsy if care is not taken to have
adequate space.
