The CPT code for bone fragments, other than pathologic fracture is 88304. I
thought that you might want to know that there is a new JCAHO directive that
states something about the medical staff coming up with a list of specimens
to be exempted from submission to Histology and a list of gross only
specimens to be prepared, in case your hospital has not come up with one.

Subject: Hammertoes and Bunions

Hi,

At our hospital the pathologists put sections through
on hammertoes and bunions. There is very little that
does not get sectioned, because they are independent
and bill fee for service. The CPT is 88302 (I think -
it is the one for bone fragments) and also the CPT for
decal (not sure what that is). Hope this helps.

Linda
