Perhaps I'm simply fortunate to have worked in locations with relatively
chemically inert tap water.  Given that disclaimer, I've not found water --
whether tap water, distilled water, or deionized water -- to be the cause of
staining problems.  If you can't reproduce a staining problem by
substituting distilled water for tap water, for example, then the water is
not the problem.

We use distilled water to dilute the alcohols because our automatic stainer
is hooked up to distilled.  We were told that it would be better to keep the
type of water consistent for the sake of quality staining.
