Hi Rick,

I assume you want to replace this with a histology/pathology oriented system. I am further going to guess that DNA ploidy quantitation by Feulgen reagent and semi-quantitative single color immunohistochemistry (HRP/DAB staining) are among the applications. The two companies I've been most impressed by in these areas are:

ImagePath Systems, Inc. http://www.imagepath.com/

and

Bacus Laboratories Inc http://www.mcs.net/~bacuslab/

I was very impressed with Al Floyd of ImagePath when I met him at the Biological Stain Commission meeting in Long Beach this summer ( http://www.urmc.rochester.edu/SMD/Path/BSC/nextmeet.html ). Bacus was the brains behind the late (and largely unlamented) CAS 200. Bacus seems mostly interested in telepathology nowadays.

If you just need a simple image analyzer, Image Pro+ (www.mediacy.com) or IPLab from Scanalytics (www.scanalytics.com) are pretty good and support lots of cameras. The former is the better Windows product.

If this is for documentation only (not for clinical quantitation), you may want to simply get a good camera that can capture images through Adobe Photoshop (typically through a "TWAIN" driver). The digital/color SPOT-2 camera comes to mind ( http://www.diaginc.com/spot.htm ) and can be used with Image Pro+ or IPLab as well.

My three rules of thumb are:

1. Buy the stuff that nails your main application.
2. An excellent camera is an excellent investment (if it helps nail your application).
3. Get a software package that is easy to learn and use, and outputs the data you need, quickly.

By the way, in the unlikely event that multicolor FISH is your major need, contact me directly.

>Date: 8 Sep 1999 12:45:46 -0500
>From: maliniakrm@worldnet.att.net
>Subject: Image Analysis
>We are currently interested in replacing our 'outdated' SAMBA Image
>Analyzer.
