Air drying before mounting is wrong because you get innumerable tiny bubbles within the section, which are held in place by the resinous mounting medium. The section looks grey and opaque. The slide must be wet with xylene before you apply the mounting medium and coverslip. You can often air-dry sections instead of dehydrating with alcohol, but xylene (or equivalent) before coverslipping is a must.
