  The average for 45 laboratories with workloads from 600 to 116,000 surgical cases/year,  are the following:
   
  1- section = 31 blocks / hour = 248 blocks / 8 hours
2- slides = 2 / block = 496 slides / 8 hours
  3- Time utilization rate = 65% which reduces the work output to 161 blocks and 322 slides per 8 hour shift.
   
  The ranges are wide.
