RE: [Histonet] cpt codes for direct smears

From:"Weems, Joyce"

It's my understanding that 88329 is a professional charge - not to be used for technical charges. Is this incorrect? Thanks,JoyceJoyce WeemsPathology ManagerSaint Joseph's Hospital 5665 Peachtree Dunwoody Rd NEAtlanta, GA 30342404-851-7376 - Phone404-851-7831 - Fax-----Original Message-----From:[]On Behalf Of Baez,JanetSent: Wednesday, September 28, 2005 5:14 PMTo: Maray Weirauch;;;;jnocito@pathreflab.comSubject: RE: [Histonet] cpt codes for direct smearsWe also bill for an 88329.Janet E. The Centersfor Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) have taken the stand thatcytopathology codes 88160, 88161 and 88162 can not be reported for thesame patient on the same date of service with codes 88304 to 88309,'Level III through VI - Surgical pathology, gross and microscopicexamination.' CMS said it considers cytopathology smears prepared fromsurgical pathology specimens as duplicate procedures that should not bereported separately. They will allow the use of modifier -59 for bypassif the cytopathology smears are performed on separate specimens andindependent diagnoses are rendered. That scenario never seems to apply to our situation, so we also billfor a Pathology consultation during surgery, 88329.>>> "Bonnie Whitaker" 9/27/2005 10:22:49AM >>>According to our billing company, we were being denied 88160 or 88161ifpermanent sections were being done on the same specimen. We arebilling an88329 for those.
