pH between 1 and 2 should be about right for a
trichrome.
The acidity is due to the phosphotungstic or
phosphomolybdic acid, which is an essential ingredient.
Checking the pH is not part of the routine of making
up these solutions.

It is important to rinse in acidified water after 
staining, and I advise taking the slides directly
from the acidified water to the first of 3 lots of
100% alcohol. The dyes are easily extracted from
the sections by non-acidified water or by
water-alcohol mixtures.
