I'd suggest the "bible" of molecular biology - "Molecular Cloning", a
3-volume set from the CSHL Press; the new edition is by Sambrook and
Russell. Not just for cloning! The old 3-volume set (2nd edition) is
great, too (Sambrook, Frisch, & Maniatis), but doesn't have the newer
toys/techniques.
