This may not help BUT.... My parents, who, when they were old and arthritic 
used to use a gadget to help them open screw-topped containers. I don't know 
what it is called, but consists of a handle with a rubberised strap that is 
attached on one side. To open the jar, the strap is tightly wrapped around 
the lid, slipped into the grip, and lateral pressure applied by means of the 
handle. It was cheap and effective for the purpose
