I missed the beginning of this thread, but, when I was teaching I always
recommended and used John Kiernan's text, "Histological & Histochemical
Methods: Theory & Practice", Pergamon Press. His text has plenty of
practical information, but, the big advantage that I found in it was that he
went into great detail explaining the theory behind most of the methods.
