This would also be dependent upon what your state reuirements are.  I  know 
here in Florida a technician cannot do IHC and Lab assistants CANNOT do  
anything technical.  The lab assistants are designed to assistin non  technical 
areas, ie. assisting with gross, accessioning, changing the  processors, 
coverslipping, distributing slides, etc.
