[Histonet] optimizing snap freezing

From:"Instrumedics"

According to experts in the field of freezing there are two requirements
that have to met to minimize the growth of damaging ice crystals. One is
rapidly freezing at low temperatures and the other is thermal exchange.

The Gentle Jane method embodies both of these requirements. A
3/4lb.chrome-plated brass heat extractor, a good conductor, is chilled in
liquid nitrogen (-196C). The heat extractor is placed on the Gentle Jane
device and falls at a controlled rate. The tissue to be frozen is placed on
the top of the mound of CryoGel or other embedding medium so that the heat
extractor contacts the tissue first for the best freezing. The tissue and
the embedding medium are frozen simultaneously in 10-15 sec.
