thick/thin cryosections

From:Don.Birgerson@leica-microsystems.com

Phil,
I have been watching the responses. I have to agree with Teri and
check the knife angle and frequently slide your knife or blade over to a
fresh cutting edge. This seems to be the most common cause of "thick/ thin"
cutting.
Our older Leica cryostats such as the Leitz 1720 and the American
optical 975C were "dove tail or sledge" type of microtomes that had to be
lubricated often and each with its special lubricant. The roller bearing
structure of the newer generation cryo microtomes seems to have taken
lubrication out of the daily routine.
The possibility of mechanical damage is usually random in its cutting
symptoms rather than alternate cutting.
