TB Exposures

From:"Jasper, Thomas"

I would like to thank all who responded to my inquiry. As was pointed out
to me anecdotal data is very non-scientific. I still appreciate the real
world information. I received 7 anecdotal instances of positive TB for
various reasons. Some of the exposures chose to take the course of drug
treatment some did not. Even in the case of negative x-ray all were offered
the treatment.
My purpose in all of this was to help establish a risk factor determination
for anatomic path staff here. We recently had a possible TB exposure (still
waiting on the mycology) to approximately 6 staff. We currently are not
considered "high" risk and I do not believe we should be. Staff
pathologists are in agreement with me as long as we gown and glove properly.
Safety committee staff had some concern and our infection control department
questioned me about anatomic path procedures as they are the ones that
designate the risk determinations. I appreciate the anecdotal data as I
related it in a staff meeting and I believe it helped to allay some concern
my staff may have felt. Again thank you all!
