I strongly recommend IrfanView, downloadable from
http://www.irfanview.com and also from several other
web sites. (A search with Google will probably bring
up hundreds, with the best at the top.)
It is freeware; you're invited to make a donation.
It lets you view any type of graphics file and make
all sorts of conversions including the ones you
Graphic Workshop from Alchemy Mindworks,
is also excellent. It's shareware, and I'm a paid
up owner. GW is a bigger thing than IrfanView, and
may have more capabilities, but in the last year,
since being told about IrfanView by a colleague,
I haven't used either GW or the fully commercial
PhotoPaint program at all.
I do a lot of converting, and also modifying images
to make them smaller for going onto my Neuroanatomy
teaching (course notes) web site. (It's
in case anyone's interested.)
IrfanView is easier to use than Graphic Workshop for
these jobs, and it also lets you do simple
modifications, such as adding text labels, cropping,
and modifying contrast, brightness and colours. It's
all very easy, and the program prompts you before you
make any change to the original file.
I can't praise IrfanView too highly, and recommend you
to download it, and send Irfan a donation (he suggests
10-20 dollars or euros) if you like it. He is a Bosnian
student, financing his studies in Austria from such
donations. I believe him, but even if he is really an
American mafia millionaire I'm be happy to pay so little
for such a superb graphics management program.
