Yes, we do diff-quik on all gastric biopsies but had to put the brake on
auto-alcian blue on esophogial bx's as they sometimes change their minds and
want pas for fungus instead and then it is too late.(we take a section on
middle level)
Some request auto-retic, fe, and trichrome on livers but if I check the H&E
and see mets. I ask the Dr. and it is usually cancelled. Biopsies are
getting smaller and we are able to do lots with very little but it is just
crazy to waste any.

We automatically do H.Pylori on all gastrics.  We also do Alcian-Blue PAS on
all esophageal biopsies and PAS & Retic on all bone marrows.  

As for a standing order..... Are special stains not at the descretion of the
pathologist?
