Re: Ammonia neutralizes formaldehyde??

From:Geoff McAuliffe

When I was an undergraduate learning EM I was adjusting the pH of a glutaraldehyde fixative. I didn't have any NaOH handy so I used ammonium hydroxide and got this strange precipitate. Hmmm. Mixed more fix, same result. ??? Mentioned it to my supervisor, "You can't buffer glut fixatives with ammonium ions!" Maybe aldehydes and ammonia don't do well together.

Has anyone ever heard of the idea that ammonia neutralizes ammonia? Someone told me this was fact- I never heard of this before and I canit imagine how this would be true. Any input from you guys?
