Julie,
If the smears have been alcohol fixed or air dried,
then there is no need to retrieve. Retrieval, so I am
led to believe, reverses the effect of formalin
fixation to some degree. Since cytology smears are
usually not formalin fixed, then retrieval is not
required. Just pop the localisation antibody straight
on. Beware that some antigens may be affected by
alcohol.
