RE: Schaeffer-Fulton Stain

From:"Morken, Tim"

We haven't used any of these spore stains and it seems that they are
designed for smears rather than tissue sections. The best source for the
methods are microbiology manuals. Two papers which discuss special stains
are:

This one concerns the accidental release of anthrax in the ex-Soviet Union.
Quantitative pathology of inhalational anthrax I: Quantitative microscopic
findings. Grinber, Lev M. et al, Modern Pathology, V.14, No. 5 p. 482, 2001.

This one concerns laboratory animal models.
The Pathogenesis of Anthrax Following the Admistration of Spores by the
Respiratory Route. Joan M. Ross, J. Path. Bact. vol 73 (LXXIII), 1957.

I must mention that one stain I could find no reference for is the Rebiger's
and Mekhin capsule stain. I think it is a German method.

Can anyone give the procedure for Schaeffer-Fulton Stain for anthrax
endospore staining. Is there another type of special that can be done . We
are writing up a procedure that is our Infection Control Pathologist and
Clinical Lab Director and would like to put as much info as we can get.
Thanks
