Re: Movat's pentachrome stain of methyl methacrylate sections

Gina Leung, Dept of Nursing & Health Sciences, The Hong Kong Polytechnic
University asks:

>>I would like to know if anyone has experience with the Movat's stain for
MMA bone sections. There are 2 ingredients the Sagrane de Gatinais, and
Brilliant-Crocein R which are not available in stain catalogues. Have they
got any other names or are they any other stains that can replace them?<<

The first is a spelling problem: Safran du Gatinais. This is a natural dye
product, the same as the cooking spice used in paella. (Don't believe it's
used in Asian cuisine.) Extremely expensive - on the order of US$10 a gram.
Used as an alcohol extract - multiple extractions with hot alcohol,
preferably with a reflux condenser (college organic chemistry lab might have
one of these).

I don't know about the availability of Brilliant Crocein R - I'm on the road
with no books.
