I work in a veterinary diagnostic laboratory and run across background
staining in various species from time to time.  When that happens I add
normal serum from the particular "case" species to the biotinylated
secondary reagent (2% normal serum per volume secondary Ab).  It usually
does the trick.

Working with hyperimmune serum as your antibody source is tricky, though.
Oftentimes you have to use it at such a high concentration, since the
antibodies are in short supply, so there is bound to be background caused by
the other serum antibodies present in the mix.
