Re: Tech injury at the microtome

From:Vicki Gauch <GauchV@mail.amc.edu>

We have had to deal with this very same issue only our tech cut the top half of her index finger off..... We were told to treat it as a needle stick/contact with blood and body fluid type incident even though the tissue she was cutting was paraffin embedded. They went so far as to check the patient's history and tests done in house to ensure the material was not infectious in any way. Hope this helps..

I need policy/procedure on a tech who cut themselves in the microtome. This
injury required stitches. Our path said to treat it as a needle
stick/contact with blood and body fluids. Remember, we are dealing with
fixed, processed, paraffin embedded tissue.
