There is an excellent free programme from NIH called NIH Image. It runs on a
Mac, but there is a crippled version for PCs available from
www.scioncorp.com. The Mac version will do everything you describe and more; it
is available from http://rsb.info.nih.gov/nih-image/. Hope this helps.
