Modified Mayers hematoxylin, chemical question

The very nice recipe for Mayers hematoxylin, eliminating chloral hydrate and
substituting the mercury salt with SODIUM IODATE, rather than Sodium
IODITE????  Never seen iodite used with hematoxylin mixtures, and need
clarification please!
