Laura,

I saw something similar to this also in recent weeks.  I noticed it in the
clear glass area of my slides, and it looked like the glass was slightly
etched in that waffle/houndstooth type pattern.  I attributed it to a bad
batch of glass slides.  It did look like the weave from a gauze sponge, but
it was unreasonable to assume that the gauze was pressed on EVERY single
glass slide the same way.  I'll be interested to see what other explanations
people come up with.
