Re: IHC Qualification Exam

From:Lee & Peggy Wenk

Guess I missed the original question, so I'll hop in on Patsy's reply.

The following is from the ASCP Board of Registry home page
http://www.ascp.org/bor
click on "qualifications"

There are 3 routes for the Qualification in Immunohistochemistry
(QIHC) exam. In summary:

If you are a registered HT or HTL (or other ASCP BOR tech),
with the appropriate amount and type of experience, you do NOT
need a degree.

If you are NOT a registered HT or HTL (or other ASCP BOR tech),
then you MUST have a baccalaureate degree, along with the appropriate
amount and type of experience.

In specifics for eligibility to take the exam:

1. ASCP certified as a technologist (HTL, MT, CT, BB, C, H, I, or M)
or specialist certified (SBB, SC, SCT, SH, SI, or SM) AND six (6)
months full time acceptable experience in immunohistochemistry within
the last five years.

2. ASCP technician certification (HT, MLT) AND twelve (12) months
full time acceptable experience in immunohistochemistry within the last
five years.

3. Baccalaureate degree or higher from a regionally accredited
college/university, AND eighteen (18) months full time acceptable
experience in immunohistochemistry within the last five years.

Applicants must have experience in the following areas

   - Immunohistochemical and Immunofluorescence Preparation
All of the following should have been performed by the applicant
                           staining technique
                           selection of proper control material
                           titration of immunologic reagents

   - Immunophenotyping in at least one of the following applications
            immunodeficiencies
            immunoproliferative disorders (neoplastic and non-neoplastic
disorders)
            transplantation biopsies
            other immunophenotyping applications
            please specify: ______________________

   - Quality Assurance
The applicant should have participated in Quality Assurance
related to all of the following
                           specimen fixation, processing, microtomy
                           reagent selection, preparation, storage, disposal
                           method selection, validation, documentation
                           quality control
                           safety

Hope this helps.
