I always thought it was a Tzanck Prep,which was more a procedure for
collecting the smears.
You scrubbed the dry scab with saline soaked gause (to removed dead cells)
then scrapped the lesion to get a smear which was then stained with Giemsa.
(some cytologist I knew preferred a pap stain)
