I have tried using the stuff when I had a small lab and I can tell you that it is not abs alc. It will cloud xylene in short order

I just made a trip to Wal-Mart and checked out their paint solvents.

Their S-L-X house brand of "denatured alcohol" goes for $3.50 a quart. The 
denaturant isn't stated, but dire threats of blindness suggest that it's 
methanol.

More important, it's unclear whether it's absolute alcohol, and I certainly 
wouldn't consider using it without finding out.
