The age range for each of the three institutions that I have been in was 
between 12 and 16 for routine tonsillectomy to get histologic examination... 
  and of course, any masses, necrosis or something unusual (like a staple - 
apparently swallowed at age 10 and with a nifty foreign body reaction).
