Re: Staffing/Workload

From:Rebecca Barnhart

The hospital I work in has the approval to add a ½ a histo tech. Which
this helps a great deal, currently there is only 1. To help in our
fight to get a cyto tech now and to show that we have increased our
work, I have an excel spreadsheet for both 2002 and this year. We enter
our daily counts of blocks, slides and recuts. I have it talling the
number of different case types, total blocks and slides for each case
type and total blocks and slides all together (we send our liquid base
paps out to be processed so I have them tallied separate from the
regular pap smear slide count) and the total recuts. Some of the number
I have to enter manually but I run monthly reports from our computer
system to get these numbers. I have also set up graphs to show the
increase in work for the year and also compared to last years volume.
Mid last year we got a new pathologist and he has increased our work and
this has proved it and so far this has worked. If I can help any
further let me know.

I'm trying to convince my director that we need an extra body (the
live
kind) to handle our workload. If anyone can share their volume and
staffing
levels so I can compare with our's I would appreciate it. Currently we
are
fully staffed with 12 techs and 5 lab asst. We have techs working 3
shifts
starting Sunday night thru Saturday afternoon. Any help would be
appreciated. Our volume is:

Cases - 48,000 per year
Blocks - 140,000
H&E slides - 180,000
Special Stains - 28,000
Immunos - 10,000
Enzymes - 4000
