you're absolutely right, of course. It seems I got
things mixed up, sorry :) If one has some of the
antigen as a contaminant in the solution, it will
naturally be a problem.

Anyway, with the pretty pure BSA from Sigma
we are using (sorry, don't remember the product details
now), we experience no problems. But this is indeed
something I'll need to take into account when testing new antibodies
in the future. Might cause some false negatives with
specific targets.
