Hi Nick

Here is a method we use for DAB disposal. Most of us feel
that it is easier to just collect it and let our
Environment, Health and Safety Department pick it up.

DAB DISPOSAL

DAB (Diaminobenzidine tetrahydrochloride). Carcinogenic
determination: neoplastic by RTECS criteria following
chronic feeding studies in mice (tumors in the respiratory
system).

DISPOSAL: The practice of treating waste solutions with
chlorine bleach (sodium hypochlorite or Cloroxo) is not
recommended, as the outcome of the reaction is unknown.
According to Lunn & Sansone (Destruction of Hazardous
Chemicals).

	1.	Prepare the following aqueous stock solutions.

		a.	0.2 M potassium permanganate
			Potassium permanganate(KMnO4)	31.6 g
			Deionized water	1000 ml

		b.	2.0 M sulfuric acid
			Sulfuric acid (concentrated)	112 ml
			Deionized water	1000 ml

	2.	Dilute the DAB solution if necessary so that its
concentration does not exceed 0.9 mg/ml.

	3.	For each 10 ml of DAB solution, add:

		a.	5 ml of solution 1.a.
		b.	5 ml of solution 1.b.

	4.	Allow mixture to stand for at least 10 hrs. It is now
non-mutagenic.

	5.	Decolorize the mixture with ascorbic acid (add powder
until color disappears).

	6.	Neutralize the decolorized mixture with sodium
bicarbonate (test with pH meter, pH paper or dipsticks)

	7.	Discard the solution down the drain provided that local
waste water authorities have given their approval.
