From:Patsy Ruegg

Region VII / CSH Program June 21, 2003
Gateway to the Rockies - Fitzsimmons
Aurora, Colorado

8:00 AM n 8:30 AM - Registration (in foyer adjacent to ballroom)

8:30 AM n 9:30 AM (Ballroom)
Topic: iApplication of Basic Immunohistochemistryi
Speaker: Gale Pace B.S., MT(ASCP)QIHC
Company: DakoCytomation
Abstract: Educational course on Immunohistochemistry. This informative
session will focus on the basics of immunohistochemistry including the
impact of fixation on tissue staining, principles of pretreatment,
antibody/antigen complexes and antigen detection. In addition the systems
used in basic histology will be discussed in regards to how they relate to
quality Immunostaining. Troubleshooting hints and quality control will also
be covered in depth.

9:30AM n 10:30 AM (Ballroom)
Topic: iOverview of Cancer Diagnostics: From Cell Morphology to Gene
Expressioni
Speaker: Gladis A. Shuttlesworth, Ph.D.
Company: BioGenex Laboratories
Abstract: Light microscopy opened an important window for the evaluation of
changes in cell morphology, and other structural changes commonly seen
during
atypical cell growth. New technologies are enabling investigators to
determine
specific proteins secreted by a particular type of cancer and to demonstrate
which genes are expressed. The evaluation of gene expression will enhance
the
specificity of cancer diagnosis. Topics will include: a) evaluation of
structural
changes, b) Immunohistochemistry (IHC) and c) In Situ Hybridization (ISH)
techniques.

10:30 AM n 10:45 AM (Sports Bar)
Morning break with the exhibitors in the Sports Bar.10:45 AM n 11:45 PM
(Ballroom)

10:45 AM - 11:45 AM (Speaker Ballroom)
Topic: "Advancements in automated baking through staining and in-situ
hybridization of clinical probes utilizing the Benchmark Staining Systemi
Speaker: Noemi Sebastiao, Ph.D., Director of Technical Marketing and
Customer Training
Company: Ventana Medical Systems, Inc
Abstract: No abstract submitted

1:00 PM n 2:00 PM (Ballroom)
Topic: iThe Vision Biosystems Bond X Immunostainer for IHCi
Speaker: Diane G. Miller HT(ASCP) QIHC, Regional Sales Manager
Company: Vision Biosystems
Abstract: This will be a presentation describing the use of the new Bond X
Immunostainer for IHC. Reagents, in reference to antibodies and the
detection
system will be discussed to familiarize attendeeis with applications used on
the
immunostainer. Instrumentation differences that may be of interest to
attendeeis
will be reviewed, in regards to decreased reagent use, and increased turn
around
time. Pre-stained slides will be available for review by the attendees.
Hands on
with the instrument exhibited in the Sports Bar will be encouraged in
reference to
the software program to document GLP.

2:00 n 3:00 PM (Ballroom)
Topic: iImmunohistochemistry Double Staining Methodsi
Speaker: Joel Martinez
Company: BioCare
Abstract: The evolving field of immunohistochemestry has led to simplifying
protpcols, with shorter incubation times and automation. The ability to
stain two.antibodies on one tissue section has evolved as well. The double
stain assay
would be much more practical for both pathologists and histotechnicians,
reducing error, reducing reagents, reducing the amount of tissue needed and
most important - TIME. Furthermore, this technology leads to a more
practical method for a pa-thologist to make a diagnosis with antibodies that
need to be stained in unison. This seminar will encompass different
possible assays to accomplish a double stain assay, tissue pretreatments,
troubleshooting and their possible applications on automated stainers.

3:00 PM n 3:15 PM
Break with the exhibitors

3:15 PM n 4:00 PM (Ballroom)
Topic: iMedical Aspects of Methamphetaminei
Speakers: Lt. Lori Moriarity, Det. Randy Goin
Handout provided by: Kaththyn Wells, MD, FAAP
Division: North Metro Drug Task Force
Methamphetamine production in the home is an ever growing problem for the
state of Colorado. As health care professionals you see the effects this
extremely
dangerous and illegal drug can have on our patients, especially the very
young.
This discussion will include the importance of education, to the community
and
health care workers, and how Methamphetamine production results in serious
psycho-social and economic consequences that eventually affect all of us.
This
discussion will include the drug, health, behavior and physical effects,
users, long
and short-term damage, and comparison with cocaine.

4:00 PM n 5:00 PM (Ballroom)
Topic: iIntroducing New Antibodies into the Laboratoryi
Speaker: Patti Loykasek B.S., HTL, and QIHC
Company: PhenoPath Laboratories (Dr. Gown, Director)
                   551 North 34th St., Suite 100
                   Seattle, WA 98103
Abstract: A discussion of introducing new antibodies into the clinical
laboratory.
This will cover choosing clones, pretreatments, detections, and chromogens.
Using automation to simplify antibody workups, and manage workflow. Also,
the validation of new antibodies will be discussed.
