Joe do all of your Histotechs that do gross have a B.A.? Our Pathologists say its not necessary to have a B.A .as long as the critical testing part and diagnosis are there responsibility. They are going to train us.We are excited. There is an ongoing debate though over Cap verses clia interpretation. Not in our lab but in general, after I posted a question on the Pathology website.LOL..Its been very helpful and informative..[not all of our histotechs have a B.A.but they are very competent and meticulous]

Melissa,
the more experienced tech gross what they feel comfortable with.  I'll gross gallbladder, appendix, amputations, cervical cones, skin biopsies (shave, punch, excisional), GI, prostate, cervical, endometrial biopsies.  Some of my techs only gross the small biopsies.  I'll gross amputations, but I do not feel comfortable grossing whole organs such as uterus, prostate, colon, lung.  My pathologist will teach and certify us as the need arises.  All we have to do is ask.

How many of us Histotechs are doing gross?
What are you limited to concerning specimens you gross in?
                Thanks for your help!
