Re: CAREER FAIR

Roxanne,

Give away H&E stained slides, especially appendix. If time allows you do a
PAS Stain on kindey or uterus. They just loved those slides. I have done
this at the Grammar School and High School level for career fairs. If you
can also have a microtome and a water bath and blocks to display. People
have no idea what goes into getting a diagnosis of their pathology. If you
can't do the microtome ,cut paraffin ribbons ahead of time, store them in
paper towels. Heat up your water bath at the fair and demonstrate the art
of picking up tissue on a slide. I usually had a picture of someone sitting
and cutting at a microtome so they would get an idea of were the paraffin
ribbons came from.

I have also given away empty paraffin blocks, with a number on the block.
This gave them an idea how their specimen was identfied. The Pathologist
and I thought that tissue in the block might not be a good idea. However,
maybe tonsil would be okay. Check with your Pathologist and see what he
thinks.

The other thing you can do is make photomicrographs of different types of
tissue and hand out pictures. People love this stuff.

I have also used animal tissue from a research lab. This helped them
understand the research side of our profession.

Last but not least, I have just taken pictures of the biopsy process from
when we recived the specimen into the lab until it reachs the Pathologist
desk. I displayed these on a board and talked about the process.

I know you have a time crunch, I hope this helps!
