It's been awhile ago, but I did do some of these glands.  Here's what I
remember, we had to cut a big study that required the analysis of this area.

You need to make a cross - section cut of the ear canal directly snug
against the skull even probably some of the skull.  Put the skull side down
in cassette and embed this side down.  When microtoming, you can't just pick
it out when you cut, I had to keep checking under scope until I got it into
view and then took my section.  But I cut so many of them that I could face
down to a certain spot and they would be there.  I'll try to explain,  In
the tissue a diamond shape area in the middle of the x -section would appear
with tissue on either side of it and the gland would be right there. I hope
this makes sense and I hope I'm remembering right, it was awhile ago, but
I'm almost positive that is what the section looked like.
