Softening solution lasts forever!
One advantage of using a commercial product, is when you run 
out, you have the container to remind you where you got it from!!!

If memory serves me right (and it does so less frequently these 
days), BDH briefly stopped making "Mollifex" some 20 years ago, 
but were surprised how much it was wanted when it became 
unavailable.
It came back on the market PDQ.
