The first hospital I worked at had no dress code for the lab and everyone went around in jeans and t-shirts. They also used lab "coats" that had been through the laundry so often that people wearing them looked like something out of a 17th century debtors prison.

We got a new lab manager and the first thing he did was institute a dress code - no more jeans and t-shirts (At least he didn't enough to require ties). So... one guy in our lab started wearing 800 dollar suits to work. One day he spilled carbol fuchsin on his suit, and then requested the lab to reimburse him for it. The lab managment refused, but the tech sued the lab and WON! Soon thereafter the dress code was amended to ban 'expensive' clothing. It took several pages to tell exactly what could and could not be worn in the lab. Seems it would have been easier to leave it all alone!

Luckily I again work in a place where dress is of no concern and even M.D.s walk around in t-shirts sometimes.
