Well I did not get a lot of responses (11 labs responded) and some are
difficult to decipher but will list the answers I got.

1 = Salary range for HT and HTL
2=  Salary range for non-certified techs
3= Number of tech in lab (FTE and PTE)
4= Average Daily block 
5= Do you do IP's?
6= Start time & first slides out by?
7= Shift Differential
8= Misc

Lab 1
1= HT $13.96 to 17.87   HTL $16.13 to 20.56
2= Do not hire uncertified.  Will accept from NAACLS program and then have 2
years to be certified or they will be out of a job.
3= Histology  FTE = 10 PTE = 3; Immuno FTE = 2 PTE = 1 ; PA =3D 3 FTE; Lab
assistants (Histology and surgical path) 5 FTE
4= 600-700 ( but as high as 1000)
5 =  Down in immnuo 2 ½ HTL (tech II)
6= two shifts  Afternoon: Start 2,3 and 4 pm.  Embed and cut 2 separate
loads of skins and small biopsies. Ready for pathologists that evening.
Days: Start 5 and 5:30 Cut all skins and biopsies left over from PMs, all
large specimens, do all special stains as well as liver, kidney and muscle
biopsies.
IM: 6,7,8 am Do 2 runs a day First one out before noon.
7= %5 at midpoint of pay range for PM shift
7.5% of midpoint for PM OT shift differential
8=  Most of the position on the PM shift are classified as HT, as they do
the embedding, sectioning and H&E staining only.  There are one or two that
are classified as HTL, as they will finish up the special stains, as well as
the kidney stains and freeze the muscle biopsies.  Most of the positions on
the AM shift are classified as HTL, as they do ALL the specialized
techniques.  1 or 2 are designated as HT positions.

Lab 2

1= No difference between HT and HTL- Range for certified is $15.50 to 19.44
2= Non certified range is $14.50 to $17.96
3= Number of techs = 4 HT's FTE;  3 not certified FTE; 1 not certified PTE;
3 PTE lab assistants and 3 FTE lab assistants for surgical pathology
4= 450-650
5= Just starting
6= 0200 and 0300.  First slides out by 0715
7= All receive a $2.00 per hour shift differential
8= Supervisor does fill in on bench if necessary

Lab  3

1= $12.40 to $18.60
2= $10.63 to $15.95
3= O FTE, 5PTE
4= 150-160
5= Yes
6= 0400, 0430, 0400 First H&E's out by 10:30, special and recuts out by 1:00
pm
7- $1.00 shift differential for 1st shift.
8= 5 pathologists, average # of slide = 210

Lab 4

1= $38,000 with full (and excellent benefits) paid vacation up to 390 hrs
and sick time

Lab 5

1= HT $10.50 - $14.50  / HTL $12.50 - $17.50
2= $9.75 - $12.50

8= Do about 175 special stain and 225 immuno/ mo  70 autopsies/ year and a
tech backs up grossing duties.

Lab 6

1= $11.00 - $16.50  Supervisor up to $24.00

8=Small lab do all logging, data entry, assisting with gross, etc.

Lab 7

1= $14.65 - 19.85  We do not differentiate between HT and HTL all do the
same job

Lab 9

Histotech with A.S. degree case load of 9,000 25 t0 45 cases a day  salary
$36,000.  I believe I was grossly under paid

Lab 10

1= $12.83 - 18.00
2= We do not hire
3= FTE= 5.5  Lab assistants = 1.75
4= 160-  Annual block count 41,000
5= 1500 billed tests, 3000 slides
6= start at 5:30 am first tray out at 8:30 am

8= Histotechs cut/stain the frozens during staffed hours ( one of the
pathologists requests us to be on call when she is on call)  Histotechs do
60-70% of gross dictation.  It keeps 1 tech busy for 5.5 hrs/day.
Supervisor assists on bench if necessary.  2 of the histotech cover as
diener with an average of 45 autopsies per year.  350 bed hospital.

Lab 11

1= $15.45 to $17.45
2= $8.75 to $10.75
3= 1 FTE .4 aide
4= 50 -80
5= no
6= 6:30 first slides by 8:30
7= no
8=  Do all won paper work, billing coding, glass ware
