Mr. richards,
Yes, we have done this and it works much better than any other heat
retreival method. We have a Singer stream iron with 15 heat settings,
but probably any would do. We got it at Wal-Mart. Of course you need a
suitable surface to do the ironing and we found one in the bin out back
- yes, a piece of cardboard is the best, and is perfectly recycleable.
We generally iron for 6 minutes at setting 12, wool, I believe. One
great benefit, besides the antigen unmasking, is the elimation of
wrinkles.
As an aside, we have an entire "kitchen" set up now, what with out
microwave, steamer and pressure cooker. We are also using a Sears
Hotpoint clothes dryer to dry slides. much cheaper than those sold in
those expensive lab supply catalogs! We did have to disable the tumble
function, however, as our slides got all mixed up and had to be
re-sorted!

Philips et al in a recent publication(J. Appl. Dom. Sci.
Tech.1999;22,37-44)
described the use of the domestic steam iron to achieve antigen
unmasking in paraffin sections. The distilled water being replaced by
citrate
buffer pH6, and by 'ironing' the sections through absorbent brown
paper
the dewaxing step is combined with the antigen unmasking.
I would be interested to hear from anyone
who has had
any success with this technique.
Thanks in advance
