Re: Patient names on slide labels

From:Joe Nocito

Deb,
we print the patients' name on our slide labels.  Concerning HIPPA, we have our slides stored in a limited access area.  Whatever labels we do not use is placed in a container for shredding by a private company.
The advantages surely outweigh the disadvantages of having the name on the slide labels.  It gives us a chance to make any corrections before the slides are given to the pathologists.

Subject: Patient names on slide labels

We recently aquired the Tamtron Path system.  We decided to put patient names on the slide labels, thinking that would give our pathologists one more way to check that are reading the right slide with the right report, (thinking of the Minnesota mix up).
The questions are what labs are doing this and what is the general consensus on this, with all the HIPPA guidelines that are in place?
Thanks,
