Grossing protocols are fine as a rough outline.  Tissue grossing in pathology must be handled individually for each specimen as the circumstances warrant.  That is where proper training and education come in.  I use grossing protocols as a very basic starting point early in my training and as such have never expanded upon the guidelines you can find in Ackerman's.
